World War II (often abbreviated to WWII), also known as Second World War. That started by the German invasion of Poland on 1st September 1939, and lasted for 6 bloody years. WWII was by far the deadliest conflict in human history. It resulted in 70 to 85 million fatalities, mostly among civilians. 10s of millions died due to genocides (including the Holocaust), starvation, massacres, and disease.

On 8th May 1945 Germany signed formal surrender documents. Bringing World War II in Europe and the Eastern Front to an end. Several countries celebrate public holidays on the day each year, also called Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). On 2nd September 1945 Japan signed formal surrender documents aboard the USS Missouri. Designating the day as the official Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day). In the wake of the Axis defeat, Germany and Japan became occupied. And war crimes tribunals were conducted against German and Japanese leaders.
