The First Indochina War started after the end of Second World War in 1946 and lasted until the French defeat in 1954. After a long campaign of resistance against the French and Japanese. Viet Minh (Democratic Republic of Vietnam) forces had claimed a victory after Japanese and French forces surrendered in the North Vietnam on 15th August 1945. On 13th September 1945 Operation Masterdom commenced involving a largely British, Indian and French task force as well as Japanese troops, versus the Viet Minh, for control of the southern half of the country. The resulting conflict restored French colonial control in 1946. The Viet Minh continued fighting the French with support from China and the Soviet Union. Eventually forcing the French out of Indochina in 1954.
