1961

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy initiated the deployment of Special Forces (SF) units to Vietnam, including the elite 5th SFG. The 5th SFG was initially dispatched as an advisory team for ARVN. providing critical guidance and support to their counterparts.

As the Viet Cong insurgency intensified in the mid-1960s, the 5th SFG expanded its operations. In 1964, the unit collaborated with local producers to create specialized gear made from Tigerstripe fabric. Including iconic fatigues and boonie hats. By February 1965, the war had escalated, and the 5th SFG was transformed into a frontline force employing unconventional and conventional warfare tactics.

Notably, the 5th SFG stood out in Vietnam for its innovative use of watercraft, particularly the Hurricane Aircat airboats. In July 1967, the unit launched a massive campaign against Viet Cong forces in the Mekong Delta. Leveraging a fleet of over 400 watercraft, including 84 airboats, as well as helicopters, Navy warships, and civilian vessels.

Ambitious Operation

This ambitious operation was designed to maximize the speed and firepower of the Aircat airboats. To do so, the 5th SFG adapted its tactics to integrate with armed helicopters, Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle hovercraft, Air Force reconnaissance planes, Navy river patrol boats, and artillery. This synchronized approach allowed the unit to achieve decisive victories against the Viet Cong.

The successful employment of these watercraft during the flood season turned a tactical disadvantage into an advantage for the United States. Marking a significant milestone in the 5th SFG’s history.
