Initially aligned with France, Portugal’s position in the War of the Spanish Succession shifted due to British naval power and strategic incentives. In 1703, Portugal joined the Grand Alliance against the Franco-Spanish Bourbons. This was cemented by the Treaty of Methuen, a two-part agreement.

The military treaty made Portugal a vital base for Allied forces, opening a new front on the Iberian Peninsula and providing a naval port for operations in the Mediterranean.

The more famous commercial treaty granted Portugal preferential tariffs for its wines in England, in exchange for lower duties on English woollen textiles. Although Portuguese campaigns in Spain had limited success, the Methuen Treaty secured a long-lasting economic and political alliance with Britain, profoundly shaping Portugal’s future.
